Most people think that strippable wallpaper means that when it comes time to remove it, it will peel right off the wall. Unfortunately, they are only partly right. When strippable wallpaper is pulled off the wall, only the top layer of the paper is removed. The backing and paste are left on the wall and need to be removed. Luckily, this is much easier then removing the entire wallpaper.

Don’t Remove It

  • If the backing is secure on the wall and you plan on hanging new wallpaper, opt not to remove the backing. However, make sure it is firmly attached to the wall. Otherwise, blistering and peeling could occur once we have hung the new wallpaper.

Soaking

  • Soak the wallpaper backing by wiping it down with a sponge and hot water. Only wet down an area that you can scrape in 15 minutes; letting the walls soak longer than that could damage the drywall. For better results, or if hot water alone isn’t working, try adding 1/4 cup of fabric softener to 1 gallon of hot water, or use commercial wallpaper remover enzymes. As the next step can get messy, cover the floors with newspaper or a drop cloth while waiting for the wallpaper to soften.
